Historical Sites and Attractions


This historic building boasts a marbled front with hanging gallows. Built in 1906 and used until 1982, the Old Pickens County Jail is on the National Register of Historic Places. Open weekends from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm except December, January and Easter Sunday. Located at 201 North Main Street. 706-268-3311

Next to the Old Jail, this cabin was built by Stephen and Mary Ann Kirby in the 1860's. The cabin is furnished with 19th century furnishings and household tools. Open weekends from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm except December, January and Easter Sunday.

Oglethorpe Monument
Dedicated in 1930 by Colonel Sam Tate to James Edward Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia Colony. Originally located atop Oglethorpe Mountain in Pickens County, the monument was in ruins by the late 1990's. Refurbished by world-renowned sculptor Eino, the monument now stands across from the Old Jail on Main Street in downtown Jasper.

Built in the mid 1930's, the Arts Center now houses a gallery, art classes and event space. Located at 68 D.B. Carroll Street, 706-692-0101.
Pickens County Marble Museum
Take a self-guided tour of the history of marble in Georgia. This museum is open year-round. View a 15 minute video and learn about the "white gold of Georgia." Museum is located at the Nelson City Hall

A quaint small city which flourished in the late 1800's, it now features stores, gift and antique shops. The Talking Rock Festival is held the 3rd weekend in October, 706-253-3581. The Talking Rock Schoolhouse Teaching Museum reflects the history, education and culture of early Appalachian residents. Interpretative experiences allow visitors to live as students in a pre-1900 rural school. Call 770-893-4032 for tours

The Old Woodbridge
The Historic Woodbridge was built in 1912, and is the only timber truss bridge in the state of Georgia. The Bridge hoovers over the Georgia Northeastern Railroad. Currently the bridge is closed to traffic, but is open to pedestrians. The old woodbridge connects Chambers Street to North Main Street, and allows convienent access to The Historic Woodbridge Inn. Pickens County Courthouse
The first Courthouse built in Pickens County burned down in 1947. The existing Pickens County Courthouse was built in 1948 and was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Marble Courthouse is made from locally quarried Marble.

Historic Tate Highschool and Tate Gym
The Historic Tate High School now serves as Tate Elementary School. The original Tate School burned in 1927, the present Marble School was finished in 1928. It was the first accredited school North of the Chattahoochee, and is the only school in the United States made of Georgia Marble. The Old Tate Gym was built in 1923-24, and was restored in 2001 by the Marble Valley Friends.

Historic Cemetaries
Pickens County has many historic cemetaries including, Tate Cemetary where Col. Sam Tate is buried, the Fitzsimmons Cemetary, and other historic cemetaries located next to local churches.

Mural Tours
There has been several murals painted throughout Pickens County.
Trail of Tears~The Trail Where They Cried is located in Jasper at the corner of Hwy 53 East and Burnt Mountain Road at the stop light. Local artists Daniel Norris and Arlette Mauresse designed and painted the mural.
Historic Marble Hill Mural is located on a water tower at the Foothills Shopping Center at the corner of Hwy 53 East and Steve Tate Hwy at the west end of the county. Daniel Norris also painted this mural.
Town of Talking Rock Mural is located in the Town of Talking Rock at the corner of Hwy 136 West and old Hwy 5. Local artist Mary Ann Manzel painted this mural with the assistance of volunteers from the community. (pictured)
Historic Walking Tours
The development of the tour of Jasper's Ten Most Historic Buildings was the effort of the Marble Valley Historical Society aided by the City of Jasper and supported in part by the Georgia Council of Arts (GCA) through appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. GCA also receives support from its partner agency, the National Endowment for the Arts.
You can pick up brochures at several downtown locations, as well as, the Chamber of Commerce.
